February 2014

On Friday 7th February a group of year 9 students took part in the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch. The school’s eco garden, although a little weather beaten provides a habitat for a great variety of species. The results of the survey have been recorded and sent to the RSPB to help update their information. To find out more about the Beacon School Eco garden and other eco-friendly activities in school, check the Eco blog. It can be accessed from the school home page by clicking on the student menu, then blogs.

News from the Eco-garden … …
Despite the best efforts of the British weather, work in the garden has continued with force! The recent stormy weather caused some damage to the greenhouse, but some running repairs and a few rolls of gaffer tape have managed to patch things up and keep the salads growing. Although not great for all of us, the heavy rains have really helped the growth of the kales and onions and we are waiting with bated breath until spring when we can harvest and enjoy the first crops of the eco garden!

Work begins in the school eco-garden

Work has begun in the school eco garden this half term with a merry band of green fingered helpers planting a variety of winter vegetables and salads in the greenhouses.

We have been planting onions, radishes, kale and leeks in the raised beds and are looking forward to the spring to harvest and enjoy them. The greenhouse is being filled with cress, rocket and salad.
